Of course, when you tell my overactive imagination that the Duchess is sporting “recycled” style, I immediately start picturing Kate Middleton greeting the Canadian Prime Minister dressed in a skirt woven from six pack rings and a papier-mâché top constructed from old fashion magazines. Of course, if that were true, the next day half of the fashionable ladies in the Western Hemisphere would be dressed in head to toe garbage and wondering where she got that lovely pale blue garbage bag cape. Since I haven’t noticed anyone dressed in trash lately, I suspect that isn’t what the Kate obsessed paps meant by “recycled.”
No, as exciting as a new trash-themed fashion wave would be, it just ain’t happening. It’s sad, but true. Kate Middleton aka Duchess Catherine isn’t wearing garbage. Nor has she hired a staff of Project Runway rejects to make her a wardrobe full of clothes constructed from recyclable materials, garden waste and things you can find in grocery store dumpsters. She hasn’t even joined the ACTUAL recycled clothing movement that Colin Firth‘s wife, Livia, is championing right now. Livia Firth has taken advantage of her husband’s Oscar-winning streak to show off her passion for ecologically friendly fashion in gowns that are often legitimately made of recycled fabric from other clothes (including her husband’s old suits) and the results have been awesome. It wouldn’t be surprising to see dear Katie joining that movement, but she hasn’t, at least not yet.
No, Duchess Catherine makes headlines for her “recycled” style because she has the audacity to wear the same items of clothing more than once. What kind of international fashion plate packs only one pair of jeans for a two week trip with her husband? Waitie Katie, that’s who. How cunning of her to be able to pair a simple pair of slim, dark wash jeans with more than one top. She can even transition those sleek, simple jeans from casual, outdoorsy settings to more formal, business casual moments. ASTOUNDING!
Even more amazing, she wore a classic (and gorgeous) coat dress to a wedding in July that she’d worn to another wedding in… 2006. That was FIVE YEARS AGO, guys. Seriously. AND she looked fashionable and stylish BOTH TIMES.
She must have MAGICAL FASHION POWERS!!
Or, possibly, just possibly, she’s a normal, if incredibly stylish, girl who doesn’t take advantage of her royal status to live a totally ridiculous lifestyle. She buys nice things that aren’t trendy, then she wears the things she likes on a regular basis, updating them with fun accessories to make them current. She’s achieved what I’ve been trying to do with my wardrobe for the last 10 years, by crafting herself a well curated, easy to manage collection of pieces that suit her and can be combined and recombined to create an endless array of lovely outfits.
If that’s what fashion recycling is all about, count me in!

Seriously! Thank you for this! I get so annoyed at the fashion police for being so stupid.
