No? We haven’t all had that dream? That’s just me? Oh. Um. Nevermind.
We all know that as much as technology often makes us look smarter, faster, cooler and generally more useful to the world, it can also make us look like total bumbling idiots if someone presses the wrong button at the wrong time.
The words, “reply all,” are often involved in such moments, but not this time. This time, it was an HTC Evo View 4G tablet conspiring with (or rather not, conspiring with, as the case may be) a computerized teleprompter that turned poor contest winner Tiffany Greene into a confused mess on the stage of Sunday night’s BET Awards.
Greene was on stage to reveal the “Viewer’s Choice Award” winner. She read from the HTC tablet that all of the presenters were using to announce the winners and declared Chris Brown the winner of the award.
Then, she looked up at the teleprompter.
Teleprompters have been causing a lot of trouble at award shows this year. One of them prompted Brooke Shields to go on a much-bleeped mini-tirade at the Tonys. At least Tiffany Greene managed not to swear when she saw that the teleprompter actually said that Rihanna was the winner of the “Viewer’s Choice Award.” She fairly gracefully corrected herself, and the audience applauded. Again.
Then it really got awkward.
Terrence Jenkins, who was also on stage, hurried up to the mic and gently shoved Greene out of the way. He took over the podium and presented the award to Drake, who accepted the award for the song he collaborated on with Rihanna. I know you’ll all be shocked to hear that Drake started his acceptance speech with, “Um, so, this is awkward.”
But wait. IT GETS AWKWARDER. How?
At the end of the show, the host of the night, Kevin Hart, was forced to go on stage and GIVE THE AWARD BACK TO CHRIS BROWN. You know, the guy whose name Greene said in the first place?
Apparently, the tablet said Chris Brown, while the teleprompter had a faulty script that said Rihanna and the people on stage who decided that the teleprompter was right were, in a nutshell, wrong.
Oh, and then, just in case the shows attempt to look high tech and new fangled hadn’t stabbed poor Tiffany Greene enough times with that spork, 500,000 people Tweeted about her blooper. That’s right, she got stuck between two computers who hadn’t compared notes, did her best and STILL ended up the butt of half a million jokes before the end of the work day on Monday.
We hate you too, technology.
