So You Want to Date a Ghost

For most of us, the biggest differences we have to overcome in a relationship are differences that most other couples also deal with. For example: I vote Republican, he votes democrat. I’m a vegan, he loves steak. I’m an agnostic, he prays before every meal. These are hard enough to overcome and often it can feel like we are coming from completely different worlds.

But what about those unfortunate few who literally come from different worlds? Like, I’m human, he’s a ghost? It takes a extraordinary amount of understanding and patience to make an inter-normal (normal vs. paranormal) relationship work. Not only do you not know where he’s been tonight, you don’t know where he is in time and/or space. How can you share a romantic dinner with a man who is insubstantial? All that hard work put into that spaghetti bolognese ends up a mess on the floor. He can be emotionally distant, cold (literally), and who knows if the sex is good. Or even existant. Can ghosts have sex? We may never know.

Here are my top 5 inter-normal relationships from movies (cause that’s hopefully the only place they exist):

Casper (1995)

Casper and Kat. So cute! Who didn’t want to be this couple! He’s super sweet, supportive, and he would do anything for Kat. When he comes to life at the end for just one dance he’s so hott! Too bad just one kiss turns him back into a weird looking cartoon. Boo 🙁

Beetlejuice (1988)

Beetlejuice and Lydia. While this was a decidely one-sided relationship between a gross older dead dude and a young girl, stylistically they are a great match. He’s dead. She wants to be dead. Perfect! Later in the animated series they become best friends and fight sand worms together. How awesome is that?

Ghost (1990)

Sam and Molly. Such a cute couple. It’s really a shame that she doesn’t even know that he’s there until the very end when she dances with him through Oda Mae. And even then, she’s still making out with Whoopi Goldberg and not Patrick Swayze. He tries his darndest to get her to notice him, even risking getting thrown off the train by that mean old homeless ghost in order to save her from his evil ex-best friend/murderer before passing on in a tear-jerking Righteous Brothers moment. If only we could all be so lucky.

Poltergeist (1982)

The Mom (Diane) and an invisible force. I think we all know what this ghost was up to, and it’s not okay. No means No, not “hey lift me up and throw me around the ceiling until I say yes.”

Ghost of Girlfriends Past (2009)

No real ghost relationship here, just a clever title and a shirtless Matthew McConaughey.
