Comediva Pick: The Fall of Pinterest

Sometimes, the internet is sucky. I don’t mean that Facebook is taking too long to load; I’m talking about those unrepeatable comments on YouTube videos, the trolls on Reddit, and your Facebook “friends” who post sexist or homophobic or misspelled status updates. There is a special place in internet hell for the trolls of the web, and a new video by College Humor called “The Fall of Pinterest” documents the epic battle between the haters of the internet and, well, the women. In their blissful Pinterest castle, the women live quietly and peacefully, spending their time on Etsy and Modcloth, and posting pictures of “wedding dresses and green smoothies.” Everything is lovely and sunny until the trolls, the memers, and the Facebook bros arrive, armed with shields, weapons, and universally dumb signs that say “Gay!” “Epic Fail!” and of course, the infuriating “Iron my shirt, b*tch!”

Led by an envoy of Scumbag Steve on a Nyan Cat, the trolls say they only wish to “lurk,” but when Steve emerges from the Pinterest castle wearing a wedding dress and a fishtail braid, the trolls attack at full force, irritating vuvuzelas at ready. Fortunately, the Legion of Etsy use their crafting skills to fend off attacks, a bacon battering ram is defeated by kale, “a super food,” and the ninja cats are distracted by the Sisters of Modcloth. Bronies, white knights, and a photobomb all also make an appearance in this grand battle for freedom from comments like “Show your tits!” I won’t reveal the ending, but let’s just say that no one really wants to see the peaceful women of Pinterest lose their one sanctuary to the trolls who conquered Facebook, Tumblr, and Reddit.

This video is a hardcore internet mashup of every meme, popular webpage, and relevant facet of social media in relatively recent memory. It’s fun to spot the memes (and also watch them be crushed under giant leaves of kale) and it’s delightfully satisfying to see the trolls fall to crafting glue and their own stupidity. Maybe someday the battle won’t be the good Women of Pinterest versus the evil Men of the Internet, but the good Men AND Women of the Internet versus the evil Small Few Who Will Always Suck.
