Lucille’s Kitty Korner: Birthdays!

Conveniently, both Skittles and I have the same birthday, so we’re making this our very first column in Lucille’s Kitty Korner: How to Celebrate Birthdays With Your Cat.

The Guest List

My Yamama says, “A man’s love can wound, but the love of a cat is forever.”  So if you love your cat, you’re going to want your cat to love his (or your) birthday party.  When making your guest list for your cat-human birthday party, make sure to only invite those of your inner circle who respect kitties.  A cat’s love and trust must be hard-won, as anyone with a feline friend would know.  So don’t just invite co-workers willy nilly.  Cat lovers only!  To prepare, invite potential guests over for short visits prior to the celebration so your cat can learn their scents.  And no dog owners allowed!  Their dogs’ scents linger on clothing and what kind of party is it where the guest of honor stays hidden under the couch all night?

The Cake

I recommend making one cake for humans and one cake for kitties.  For some reason, humans don’t care for the kitty cake.  You can make your human cake an homage to your kitty by cutting a sheet cake into the shape of a fish.  Someone once suggested I cut it into a cat shape, which I found deeply offensive!  No one wants to see oneself devoured in cake effigy on one’s birthday, does one?  And please: No chocolate cake!  It’s rude to eat something that’s poisonous for your cat in front of him or her.

Kitty Cakes

Ingredients and other whosits you’ll need:

Cupcake Liners

1 can of tuna

3 eggs

¼ cup of flour

1 tsp of baking soda

1 can of sardines

2 sheets of Nori* (dried seaweed)

Bonito flakes*

*Both of these can be found in the Asian section of your grocery store.

Preheat oven to 350° F.  Line cupcake tray with liners.

Blend sardines well in a food processor.  Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.  Add the eggs, tuna, and sardines.  Stir until evenly mixed.  Crumble the nori sheets and fold them into the mixture.  Evenly divide the batter into cupcake liners.  Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the top appears to be golden brown.

When serving this to your kitty, remove the liner and sprinkle bonito flakes over the cake.  They will curl and move with the heat, which will give your cat a thrill!

The Decorations

Balloons with long ribbons are a big plus, but only if you’re careful not to pop them — kitty no like big pop!  For a more exotic theme, try peacock feathers in a vase and invite your guests to use them to entertain your cat of honor.  Skittles adores peacock feathers!

That’s all the time we have for now, thanks to Shirley — grrr.  Here’s wishing you a purrrfect birthday celebration!

love,

Lucille and Skittles
