Erika’s Picks: Love and Photoshoppin’

It’s ridiculously hard for me to pare down my favorites on the site to one Top 10 List, so I made a Top 11 List. #overachiever

Bacon or Kevin Bacon? by Luis M. Navarro

canadian-Bacon
This gem features some of the funniest photoshoppin’s of bacon I’ve ever seen — both Kevin and the meat itself. Also, this line sums up everything I love about the silliness of the internet and movies and bacon: “A “Bacon Index” score is bestowed on thespians to indicate the number of films separating them from Kevin Bacon. There is no “Bacon and Eggs Index.” Not such a big shot now, huh, Bacon and Eggs?”

6 Signs You’re Actually A Man by Linda Chavez

sarahsilverman_mustache_082611
At Comediva we have kind of an inside joke that our own Emily, aka Airhumps, is actually a man. Linda seized this concept and used “unicorn science” to turn it into an article that everyone could enjoy. P.S. My mom uses Old Spice too.

Hot Mess: Biological Timebomb by Amanda Deibert, Art by Cat Staggs

hotmess_biotimebomb_homepanel
Picking a favorite Hot Mess comic is a toughie, but this one has always been one of mine because of Cat Staggs’ awesome illustration of a ticking time-bomb uterus chasing Amanda.  Plus, that pushy biological clock is something most gals can relate to, and is visualized with utter awesomeness here.

My So-Called Super Life by Bridget Tyler, Art by Emily McGregor

October-4th
As a fan of “My So-Called Life” growing up, this delighted me on many levels — thanks to Bridget’s hilarious imagining of an angsty teenage superhero, and also Emily’s adorable notes that totes look like something I would’ve passed to a pal in chemistry class. “Don’t date supervillains!” has got to be the mantra of adolescence for teens both super and non-super.

Cthulhu’s In My Bathtub! by Kristen Bobst

cthulhu_rubber-duck
When I first read this, I didn’t even know who Cthulhu was, but by the time I was done, I wanted to get soapy with H.P. Lovecraft’s slimy octopus-dragon-overlord. Because “Cthulhu is more versatile than 10,000 rubber duckies!”

Kitty Lit 101 by Nikki Muller, Art By Erika Cervantes & Emily McGregor

catsby2
Some of Nikki’s punny titles in this piece are so good, I can’t believe no one’s done ’em before. And then Em and I had the pleasure of Photoshoppin’ the book covers, and “The Great Catsby” is still one of my favorite things I’ve ever ‘shopped for the site.

7 Reasons Justin Bieber’s An Alien by Hanna Lieberman

bieberalien
Once in awhile, one of our interns will write something that really cracks me up, and summer 2011 intern Hanna made it happen. This might be my favorite line: “It is common knowledge that aliens can’t resist Spaghetti Bolognese.” Plus, the green Bieber head and Bieber space jacket really sell the whole thing for me.

How To Tell If Your Unicorn Has A Crush On You by Magnolia Scotch, Art by Emily McGregor

unicorn_crush_thumb
This is one of the most ridiculous illustrations we’ve ever published, and I laughed out loud as hard as I can remember laughing at anything. The image of a unicorn bringing you tampons is priceless. 10 Points to Gryffindor! Err, Team Airhumps/Scotch.

Top 5 Age-Inappropriate Couples by Vickie Toro

lynch-bieber
Imagining odd pairings is one of our favorite things to do at Comediva, and with this one, Vickie knocked it out of the park. Just imagining Jane Lynch dating Justin Bieber (because he’s a lesbian, right?) induces major lol-age.

If Cereals Were Movies by Kristen Bobst, Art by Erika Cervantes and Emily McGregor

countchocula
A gem from the brilliant brain of Kristen Bobst, or The Bobstcat, as I call her. Em and I had a blast Photoshoppin’ the posters for these movies based on cereals — I’m probably most into how easily Count Chocula replaced R-Patz in the Twilight spoof.

Top 7 RILFs: Robots I’d Like to F**k by Erika Cervantes & Luis M. Navarro

rilfs_buffy-bot_250
RILFs is the first in Luis’s ‘ILFs series, and also my first writing collab with him. The inclusion of the Buffy-bot brings me particular joy. And Luis’s idea to call Gort from The Day the Earth Stood Still “majestic and statuesque,” which might be the best Gort description ever.
